Geneva
With an international atmosphere, an enviable standard of living and a natural outdoor playground on its doorstep, Geneva has plenty to shout about.
Super sleek, slick and cosmopolitan, Geneva is a rare breed of city. It's one of Europe's priciest. Its people chatter in every language under the sun and it's constantly thought of as the Swiss capital - which it isn't. This gem of a city superbly strung around the sparkling shores of Europe's largest Alpine lake is, in fact, only Switzerland's third-largest city.

For starters, the biggest city in French-speaking Switzerland has a plum location. Bang in the heart of Europe, and framed by the snow-capped mountains of the Alps and Jura, Geneva wraps itself around the western end of Lake Geneva with the famous Jet d'Eau proudly marking the spot.

On arrival, it's hard not to be impressed by the imposing banks, the 5-star hotels, the designer boutiques and the swish restaurants strung along the lake's glamorous shores. The city centre exudes wealth and status too, boosted by the presence of myriad multinational companies enticed here by Geneva's international outlook and strong economy.
It's also home to the UN’s European headquarters, the International Red Cross, the World Health Organization and a clutch of other governmental and non-governmental bodies. The majority are drawn by Switzerland's famed neutrality where, despite its location, the country hasn’t joined the EU. The babble of different cultures makes for a cosmopolitan atmosphere on the streets, where visitors will hear English spoken as much as French.

It also means the city has a real global presence and it's often in the news for being the place of peace negotiations or international treaties.
When it comes to outdoor activities, Geneva is perfectly placed too: it's just a short hop to many of Switzerland and France's top mountain resorts including Tignes, Verbier and Val d'Isere. But skiers and hikers heading straight from the airport to the Alps don’t just miss out on the city's lively restaurant scene, important museums and diverse shopping, but on its crowning jewel, the beautiful Lake Geneva. Take a stroll along its classy Rive Gauche (Left Bank) and picnic by the impressive Jet d'Eau. Certainly take a cruise or try the latest trend in water sports, because if you haven't experienced what the lake has to offer, then you haven't experienced Geneva.
