Seville

Andalusia’s atmospheric capital, Seville, is filled with charming traditional architecture in colors of lemons, plums and oranges. It is a world of larger-than-life festival celebrations and flamboyant cultural arts. Romantic, feisty and passionate - words that are so often associated with Spain - are all brought to life in the city’s maze-like alleyways.

In its historic quarters, the merciless bullring looms over picturesque walkways along Rio Guadalquivir, whilst mournful laments drift lazily through the cobbled streets of one of Europe's most romantic cities. Traditional horse-drawn carriages still amble around the city, clomping alongside the city’s sleek new metro system, which has sprung up the last five years. Such is Seville; it’s a hybrid of contrasts visible at every turn. While one hoof is still in the past, the other is sliding decidedly towards the future.

Visitors can marvel at the impressive Plaza de España or get lost amongst the laneways of Barrio Santa Cruz. Seville is currently undergoing a tapas revolution and while traditional Andalusian taverns are still rife.

The city provides plenty to entertain visitors any time of day. Party with the in-crowd at Plaza Alfalfa and Tiana’s Calle Betis, sip sangria in leafy plazas or soak up the solitude on a Sunday afternoon along the riverbank or in the Parque de Maria Luisa. Culture vultures can swoop on the numerous museums and megalithic monuments of yesteryears, whilst eagle-eyed visitors will be able to find new fascination at every turn. Don’t forget to explore the city’s Moorish past, with visits to the ornate Real Alcázar palace and gardens, the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) and the famous La Giralda tower, from which you can see stunning views across the whole city.
